Wheel Drive Series Planetary Gearbox

Product Overview

The Wheel Drive Series Planetary Gearbox, also known as a wheel motor gearbox, hub drive reducer, wheel-end planetary gearbox, or in-wheel drive unit, is a purpose-engineered epicyclic transmission designed to mount concentrically within or directly onto a driven wheel hub. Unlike conventional axle-mounted or transmission-based drive systems, the Wheel Drive Series places the reduction stage at the wheel itself, eliminating long propshafts, reducing drivetrain complexity, and enabling independent wheel torque control, which is the foundation of modern electric drive and autonomous vehicle architectures.

The series spans output torque from 500 N·m to 120,000 N·m, covering compact planetary wheel drives for AGV and AMR platforms requiring sub-200 mm diameter envelopes through to heavy-duty wheel drive gear reducers for wheeled excavators and mining vehicles demanding sustained tractive effort on steep grades. Both hydraulic motor and electric motor input variants are standard catalogue items.

With the rapid electrification of mobile machinery, from warehouse AGV and AMR fleets and electric agricultural tractors to hybrid wheeled excavators, the compact, high-efficiency Wheel Drive Series Planetary Gearbox has become a critical component in modern electric powertrain design. Its coaxial layout minimises unsprung mass compared to direct hub-motor drives while delivering 3 to 5 times the torque density of equivalent helical gearboxes, making it the engineered choice wherever space, weight, and efficiency are simultaneously constrained.

How the Wheel Drive Planetary Gearbox Works

The Wheel Drive Series Planetary Gearbox, also called a wheel-end reducer, hub planetary gearbox, or in-wheel transmission, applies a compact coaxial epicyclic gear arrangement to perform speed reduction and torque multiplication directly at the driven wheel, eliminating the mechanical losses and weight of a centralised gearbox-and-driveshaft system. For electric vehicle platforms, this directly extends battery range and reduces maintenance complexity.

1

Motor Input

A BLDC, PMSM electric motor or hydraulic motor drives the sun gear at high speed through a splined or keyed input shaft, transmitting power coaxially into the first planetary stage.

2

Planetary Reduction

The sun gear drives three or more planet gears meshing with a fixed ring gear. The planet carrier rotates at reduced speed with multiplied torque, repeated across two or three stages to achieve ratios up to 200:1.

3

Hub Flange Output

The final planet carrier connects directly to the wheel hub flange, rotating at precisely controlled speed with full rated output torque to propel the vehicle wheel.

4

Parking Brake Hold

Optional spring-applied parking brake locks the output hub whenever the electric or hydraulic release signal is removed, preventing vehicle movement on slopes or during emergency stop events.

5

Encoder Feedback

Integrated encoder port provides real-time speed and position feedback to the vehicle controller, essential for closed-loop AGV/AMR navigation and precise agricultural headland turning.

The coaxial layout eliminates bevel gear sets, driveshafts, and universal joints found in conventional axle drive systems. For electric-powered platforms, this layout minimises drivetrain losses and extends battery range by 8 to 15 percent compared to centralised transmission architectures. For autonomous platforms, independent wheel control enables zero-radius turning, diagonal movement, and millimetre-level positioning that conventional drivetrains cannot achieve.

Complete Your Drivetrain: Wheel Drive Planetary Gearbox + PTO Shaft

For tractor-powered field equipment and agricultural machinery with offset power sources, pairing our Wheel Drive Planetary Gearbox with a matched PTO Shaft creates a complete, reliable power transmission solution from tractor PTO output directly to the driven wheel axle.

In self-propelled agricultural machinery and field utility platforms where the engine or tractor PTO is remote from the driven wheel hub, a PTO shaft provides the critical link, transmitting rotational power across angular offsets and variable distances. Combined with our Wheel Drive Planetary Gearbox, this creates a fully integrated traction drivetrain that can be adapted to a wide range of agricultural chassis configurations without custom engineering of rigid driveshaft layouts.

🌾

Agricultural Field Performance

Tractor-powered soil preparation and harvesting equipment uses PTO shafts in Category 1, 2, or 3 standard to connect engine output to the wheel drive gearbox, enabling high-torque, low-speed wheel propulsion even on soft or wet field surfaces where wheel slip must be minimised.

🛡

Drivetrain Overload Protection

PTO shafts with integrated shear-bolt or friction torque limiters protect the wheel drive planetary gearbox from sudden load spikes caused by hitting embedded rocks, tree roots, or sudden traction loss, significantly extending gearbox service life in unpredictable field conditions.

📐

Installation Flexibility

Wide-angle CV-joint PTO shafts allow articulation angles up to 80 degrees, enabling the tractor to steer and manoeuvre across terrain while the wheel drive gearbox remains in its fixed hub mount position, maintaining smooth power delivery without vibration or driveline stress.

🔧

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from design engineers, procurement managers, and service technicians about our wheel motor gearbox range for AGV, agricultural, excavator, and mobile vehicle applications.

1
What is the difference between a wheel drive planetary gearbox and a standard helical gearbox for mobile machinery?
A standard helical gearbox uses parallel offset shafts, resulting in a bulky asymmetric shape that cannot fit inside a wheel rim. A wheel drive planetary gearbox uses a coaxial epicyclic arrangement where motor input and wheel output share the same axis, allowing the entire transmission to fit concentrically within the wheel hub. The planetary also delivers 3 to 5 times greater torque density than a helical gearbox of equivalent size, which is critical for fitting maximum torque into the constrained wheel-end envelope. For AGV and AMR applications, the coaxial layout also enables zero-radius steering and independent wheel torque control that helical drivetrains cannot achieve.
2
Can your wheel drive gearbox be used with BLDC or PMSM electric motors for AGV and AMR applications?
Yes. Our planetary wheel drive for AGV and AMR variants are specifically designed for direct mounting of BLDC and PMSM motors via custom-machined motor adaptor flanges. Input shaft bore and spline are matched to the motor shaft specification. The integrated encoder port (incremental or absolute) allows the vehicle controller to directly monitor wheel speed and position for closed-loop navigation. Motor adaptors are provided as part of the standard supply with no additional hardware required.
3
How do I calculate the correct gear ratio for my wheel drive application?
Required gear ratio equals motor max RPM divided by required wheel RPM. Required wheel RPM equals vehicle max speed in metres per second multiplied by 60, then divided by the result of pi multiplied by wheel diameter in metres. For example: motor 3,000 RPM, vehicle speed 1.5 m/s, wheel diameter 0.25 m gives required wheel RPM of approximately 114.6 RPM and a gear ratio of approximately 26:1. Apply a service factor of 1.2 to 1.5 to the calculated output torque. Our application engineers will perform a full drivetrain calculation - submit your vehicle parameters here.
4
What sealing and lubrication is used in agricultural machinery variants?
Our wheel drive planetary gearbox for agricultural machinery uses oil-bath lubrication (ISO VG 220 gear oil) for the planetary gear set, combined with Duo-Cone floating face metal seals at the hub output providing IP67 protection against water jets, mud, and chemical splash from fertilisers and pesticides. HNBR compound seals are standard for chemical resistance. Oil change interval: first change at 500 operating hours, then every 2,000 hours or annually. Grease-packed variants are available for light-duty agricultural AGV platforms where maintenance-free operation is prioritised.
5
Can your gearbox directly replace the Bosch Rexroth GFT wheel drive on my wheeled excavator?
In the vast majority of cases, yes. Our wheel drive gear reducer for wheeled excavators is dimensionally reverse-engineered from Rexroth GFT series specifications, matching hub flange bolt circle diameter, motor flange pattern, output spline (DIN 5480), and overall axial length. Provide the existing GFT model number or the excavator make and model and we will confirm dimensional fit and torque compatibility within 24 hours. We maintain ready-to-ship cross-reference inventory for GFT17, GFT24, GFT36, GFT80, and GFT110 wheel drive series. Submit your cross-reference request
6
How does the integrated parking brake work, and is it required for AGV applications?
The optional spring-applied parking brake engages automatically whenever the 24 VDC electric or 20 to 35 bar hydraulic release signal is removed, for example on emergency stop, power loss, or end-of-mission parking. It holds 150 percent of rated output torque in static condition, preventing the vehicle from rolling on inclines. For AGV and AMR vehicles operating on ramps, loading docks, or multi-level facilities, a parking brake is strongly recommended and is mandatory in most safety-rated automated material handling systems per ISO 3691-4. For flat-floor warehouse AGVs without ramp operation, the parking brake remains optional.
7
What is the lead time and do you hold stock?
For standard AGV/AMR compact variants and common OEM cross-reference units including Rexroth GFT17 to GFT80 and Bonfiglioli W series, we maintain warehouse stock for dispatch within 48 to 72 hours. Custom hub flanges, non-standard gear ratios, or ATEX-certified variants carry a lead time of 15 to 35 business days. Agricultural and heavy-duty excavator cross-reference units are typically available within 7 to 14 days from regional distribution inventory. Contact us for real-time stock confirmation.
8
What documentation is provided with each wheel drive gearbox?
Every unit ships with a Factory Acceptance Test report covering efficiency, brake torque, runout, and leak test results; a dimensional inspection certificate; material and heat treatment certificates for main gear components; installation, operation, and maintenance manual in English with other languages available on request; and 2D installation drawing plus 3D STEP model file. CE Declaration of Conformity and ISO 9001:2015 quality certificate are included. ATEX certification documentation is available where specified at time of order.

How to Select the Right Wheel Drive Planetary Gearbox

Follow these five steps to specify the correct wheel motor gearbox for your mobile vehicle application. Our engineers are available to assist at every stage.

Step 1: Define Max Traction Torque

Max tractive force in Newtons multiplied by wheel radius in metres equals required wheel output torque in N·m. Apply service factor of 1.2 to 1.8 for vehicle acceleration, gradient, and payload variation.

Step 2: Calculate Gear Ratio

Gear ratio equals motor max RPM divided by required wheel RPM. Wheel RPM equals vehicle max speed in m/s multiplied by 60, then divided by pi multiplied by wheel diameter in metres. Confirm motor rated torque multiplied by gear ratio exceeds required wheel torque.

Step 3: Specify Motor Interface

Provide motor type (BLDC, PMSM, hydraulic), frame size or flange standard, and shaft diameter. Confirm whether an encoder is required and specify encoder type (incremental or absolute, PPR, voltage).

Step 4: Confirm Hub Interface

Provide wheel hub bolt circle diameter, number of bolts, pilot diameter, and axle spline specification if applicable. Advise if hollow shaft pass-through for axle stub is required. For OEM replacement, supply the existing part number.

Step 5: Specify Environment

Advise operating environment: indoor AGV (clean and dry), agricultural (chemical, mud, water), construction (impact, dust, water), or mining and tunnel (ATEX). This determines sealing spec, coating system, bearing selection, and lubricant type.
